“I write because nobody listens.”

on February 6, 2013

I saw a picture of a man writing this in graffiti on a wall, and it instantly hit me. There are so many things going on in the world and so many ways to get something – even just a word – out to others. People are listening to their music on their phones, talking with their friends, or watching their favorite television show. People have homework to complete (even if they do it grudgingly), jobs to do, family to look after… Does anybody really even have the time to listen?

You may say yes. You may completely disagree with what I am about to say, but I will say it anyway. Nobody really listens to what is important and true – at least, not after it’s been said one hundred times too many. People listen to things they want to hear, even if it’s false. It’s so easy to be abiding in a gossip circle or to ignore the things that you don’t want to know about yourself. Is it easy to know that there are things going on that should matter more? No. It’s difficult to believe in things that aren’t beautiful. It’s difficult to want to know about things that are ugly, the blood and the death and the lies that fill our world. But it does.

People suffer all the time – whether it be from poverty or hunger or gang wars (and real wars) or depression. A lot of people will pretend to be listening, but do they really understand what these people are going through? Or are they just putting on a mask of abhorrence that they will peel away as soon as they are behind closed doors? I may be wrong; I don’t know too many people that are like this.

Depression is important in this conversation. There are so many wonderful people out there that don’t see themselves as they truly are – beautiful and unique and lovely and perfectly imperfect. Yet when they try to speak out, not everyone comes rushing to help them. Some people may think they are even acting out, that they just want the attention. So they ignore it.

Even if it’s not a big issue like war or mental illnesses or poverty… People still aren’t always heard. Maybe it’s because people don’t want to listen to them or maybe it’s because they aren’t brave enough to talk. Writing is something that really allows a person to express themselves, especially if they can’t find the words when talking. It’s a comfort, because you know that someone will read it. And someone will, won’t they?

This is a little more depressing than my usual posts, but this picture really started a war inside my head. It’s just a sentence, but it means so much. Please share your thoughts, because I would love to know what others think about this quote.
